What causes snoring?
Snoring is caused by a narrowed airway during sleep which can result from large tonsils, a long soft palate or uvula or, in people who are overweight, excessive flabby tissue in the throat. All of these areas relax during sleep, and tend to vibrate with each breath.
Nasal congestion from allergies, or deformities of the cartilage in the nose can also contribute to a narrowing of the airways.
However, the most common cause of a narrowed or restricted airway is the tongue muscle, which can relax too much during sleep and is easily sucked back into the throat with each breath More..
Snoring occurs because air travels more rapidly through a narrow tube than through a wide one. This rapidly-moving air causes the relaxed soft tissues (tonsils, soft palate or uvula) to vibrate. It is this vibration that is the sound of snoring.
By keeping the airway open, air travels more slowly, reducing or stopping the vibrations, and thus reducing or stopping snoring.
The aveoTSD® anti-snoring aid employs one of the most effective ways of keeping the airway open during sleep by holding the tongue forward.
It is now recognized that treating snoring can lead to a greatly enhanced quality of life for many people and their partners. |
